Howe Beaten By Red Fury In Caulfield Cup

MELBOURNE, October 16.

Howe was backed so heavily on the course that he started- favourite for the Caulfield Cup. He dreW an outside barrier position, which was considered against him. Such solid support was unexpected, as Saxony, which won the Toorak Handicap so well last Saturday. Had been first choice until just before the start of the race.

Despite his barrier position Howe was soon in a good position and with six furlongs to go was running second. Taking charge round the home turn, he was first into the straight and with a furlong, to go appeared the probable winner. Near the post his weight began to tell and Red Fury, finishing fast on the outside, defeated him by a length and a quarter, with De La Salle two lengths away third. The winner, which bad failed in the Herbert Power Handicap last Saturday, met with a hostile reception on returning to scale. Howe ran a splendid race, but just failed at the finish. A lot of use was made of him early to obtain a good position, and this probably caused his defeat. In the extra distance and the longer stretches at Flemington he will be very hard to beat in the Melbourne Cup, and he is not likely to lose any of his popularity for that race by his defeat today. , De La Salle showed what a great mare she is by struggling on to third place, while Saxony was cut out at the start and was soon a long way back. She gradually improved her position, but the effort proved too much and she just missed a place. After being prominent in the early stages Beau Gem was beaten a long way from home, while his stable companion, Royal Gem, was never a possibility.
