Revolte And The Hob Successful At Orari

[SPECIAL TO STAR] CHRISTCHURCH, October 16. Clyde Bridge was sent out a staunch facourite for the Geraldine Cup at Orari today, but was never in a winning position and finished sixth. The race was won practically all the way by Revolte, owned by Messrs A. T. Donnelly and D. E. Wanklyn, and trained by J: Tomkinson, who led in Coral Arc in the Wellington Handicap at Trentham. Revolte entered the straight with a clear advantage from Royal Sal, with Bren Gun, Renege, Graeme and Clyde Bridge following'. Bren Gun finished on to gain second place, but had no chance with the leader. Graeme struggled on for third money and Rival Chase headed the remainder. The West Coast visitor, Shenandoah, was kept in restraint on this occasion, but petered right out with three furlongs to go. The open sprint was won by The Hob, a three-year-old gelding by Lo Zingaro from Kerbside, dam of Hearth and 'Prize Ring, and he comes from the same family as the Trentham winner, The! Grate, both being bred by their dwner-trainer, D. P. Wilson, of Wingatui. Whitley led into the straight from The Hob and Connaught, but, having his first race this season, did not last long in the run home. The Hob soon drew to the front and was never in danger. Connaught held on to beat the faster finishing West Coaster Chellow Dene for second money with Whitley next in front of Palomino and Erinborough. Chellow Dene was not well favoured at the start.

Knight Crusader took the lead half a mile from home in the Rangitata Hurdles and carried on for an easy win from Kiloney and Jovial Hour. These two followed him over the last fence, and Kiloney outstayed Jovial Hour for second place. Martial Note, having his first race over the battens, was next, clear of Lord Broiefort, who again gdve a disappointing display. Starry fell at the second fence, and Mister John in the middle stages. The winner is trained at Wingatui by R. Heasley for Mr A. N. Smith, of Dunedin, owner of Coral Arc, winner of the £3500 Wellington Handicap today. Creditable Performance

Jan was responsible for a creditable performance in winning her race, as she stumbled badly five furlongs from home, and nearly came down. She gradually made up lost ground, however, and following Rampage and Lilli Marlene into the run home, wore the last-named down nearing the post to gain a narrow verdict. Autoshine was a fair third, in front of Night Owl, Rampage and Loch Lennox. Jan is a four-year-old by Salmagundi from Jedburgh by Balboa from the English mare Sabor, and although the family has not been very successful, a high opinion is heild of this chestnut filly- ' Saieda, winner of the first division of the Ohapi Stakes is a four-year-old gelding by Stourbridge, and is trained at Washdyke by P. Andrews for his Timaru owners, Messrs A. IVL, J. B„ and J. F. Morrison. Zarcon, winner of the second division, is a three-year-old filly by Lo Zingaro, and with no form to recommend her, she paid a big double figure dividend. Sword Dancer, who had a success at Reefton last month, returned to the winning list by a decisive success in the concluding event, the Belfield Hack Handicap. The win favourite, Marut, was again slow early, but although he made up a good deal of ground was beaten for second place by Top Class. Blue Hussar finished on into fourth place. Trotting Events The two trotting events attracted large fields, and the first, the Geraldine Trot, had to be run in two divisions. Bright Horizon and Rhonda Grattan carried most support, but while the former filled second place in the first division, the supporters, of Rhonda Grattan soon lost interest as she broke and fell after half a mile had been covered and six other contestants were eliminated in the consequent smash up. These were Cavaiiar, Kakahu Pride, Free Alecia, Honest Truth, Mytax and Dictaphone. All of the drivers escaped injury. The first division was won by Airborne, who led throughout and was never in danger in the run home. Bright Horizon was third into the straight, but wore down Blue Signal for second place. Bronze Gold headed the strung-out remainder.

Victory Globe was the leader for the first five furlongs in the second division and then gave way to Sure Nut, who led him into the straight. He tried to get through on the inside of Sure Nut in the run home, but was blocked until the closing stages when he took advantage of an opening and got up to beat Sure Nut in the last stride. Golden Prince was a fair third in front of Monastery Hill. Grandeur took charge at the end of five furlongs in the Orari Trot and led into the straight from Squire Dillon, Locknit and Blonde Sailor. Blonde Sailor soon had the leader’s measure in the run to the post, but Grandeur kept him up to his task, and there was only a head margin across the line. Squire Dillon was a close third in front of Seven Bar. Heavy rain for the greater part of the second half of the programme did not encourage speculation, but the totalisator handled £28,453 10s, compared vzith £25,258 last year.
