SPORTING Coral Arc Outclasses Field At Trentham: The Grate Impressive

[SPECIAL TO STAB]

WELLINGTON, October 16.

Corac Arc, a soft of the English Derby winner Coronach, scored a convincing win in the Wellington Handicap at the Wellington. Racing Club’s spring meeting at Trentham today. He Ws lightly Weighted, but he won too well for any excuse to be made for the beaten lot. Half a mile from home Coral Arc still had 12 horses m front of him, but he gradually made up his ground, and a furlong froin the winnino- post he came right into the limelight to win comfortably from the fart-finishing Signal Officer, with Ballinagh, Welcome Guest, and Merry Robin next.

BatlOy made all the early pace and with seven furlongs to go he was closely attended by Kartikeya and Kippo, with Welcome Guest, Bronstar, Distinction, Silver Treasure, Bon Chale, Dunbar, Coral Arc, Lord Holland, Royal Tan, and Ballinagh following in that order. Batley led into the straight from Ballinagh and Silver Treasure with Distinction, Tilting, and Renowned next. Batley soon weakened and at the luilong Ballinagh had Silver Treasure beaten and was being challenged by Signal Officer and Coral Arc. These two soon headed off Ballinagh, and Coral Arc came right away over the last half furlong to beat Signal Officer by two lengths and a halt, with a length and a half to Ballinagh, which held on to beat Welcome Guest for third by a neck. Merry Robin was right up with them and then came Valley Boy- Pimlico, Bronstar, Indian Dawn, Lord Holland, and Bon Chale. „ . In the first furlong of the principal sprint event, the Shorts Handicap, Da Vinci, Excellency Citril and False Step were severely checked, and coming to the straight Air Belle was closely attended in front of General Victory and Deprive, with Lxcellency and Da Vinci showing up. Da Vinci continued a splendid run and reaching the front inside the last furlong he stayed on to win decisively by a length from Excellency, who was badly placed until she got clear a furlong from home. Castieoiae finished fast from the back and was only a nose behind Excellency with Air Belle fourth. False Step, Citril, Golden Shar, Morocco and Geneiai Victory were next.

Impressive Win Demonic had a comparatively easy win in the Wainui Handicap, fmisning strongly after being m a good position throughout Turning Im home Frances and Peter Fheio wu the leaders with Winter Sweet, Robin’s Reward, Mangatiti, Zealand er and Demonic all prominent. Demonic came through a iurtang from home and won comioitably Bom Zealander, who finished well to beat Robin’s Reward. Winter Sweet iad ed a little into fourth place alter being orominent all the way, and then’ came Frances, two lengths away, Sweet Nymph, Night School and King’s Ransom. Mary burn and Julius Ceasar were the last two to fl Super Snipe, a brilliant three-year-old Taulocn, won the Wellesley Stakes two-year-olds) like a very good colt. He was fourth into the straight, after - from, a bad . position and fmisnect splendidly to beat his bracketed mate, Robinfayc, by three-quarters ot c length. Golden Spa, not P early, finished solidly into thud place and the next to Rising Tide, Caronia, and Trinidad. Joycette faded right out after leading into the straight. Desert Gold Stakes Flving Sovereign, by Airway f ro ™ that good miler, Sovereign Lady, gaw an attractive display of galloping m winning the Desert Gold Stakes, sne was in seventh place, but still fair y hnndv half a mile from home, but Snm y there on she improved her posi- & and™ e came thr Jug! > on me mb +n take the lead a furlong from me nost From then on it was only a aues'tion of what would be second foi the Airway filly strode away and won with ridiculous ease from uoiaeii Amber, with Curtana finishing well m third place. La Modelle and Balkis were close up next and there was then a gap to Festal. Champagne was right in the picture until a furlong fiom home, but she failed to stay. D P. Wilson produced The Grata m first class order for the October Hack Handicap and the Salmagundi maie won her second race in succession. She was on the outside of six horses at the home turn, making up ground she had lost earlier, but once straightened up she finished brilliantly and was two lengths clear of another fast finisher, Fighting Fox as she crossed the line. Lady Minter and Pierre made most of the running and turning for home they were clear of Irresistible, Buchanan, Victory Night, Olympia, Billy Rutl n and Fighting Fox. Buchanan took over from Pierre 100 yards from the post but The Grate then appeared on the scene with an irresistible run and had a comfortable victory. Fighting Fox finished well for second and Beau Or was a good third. Buchanan was a head away fourth and then came Master Kip? Pierre, Irresistible and Ballochbuie. ,

■r • t Surprise Victory Second at his last start, over hurdles at Dundein, Revivre scored a surprise win at long odds in the Rimutaka Hack Handicap, beating the hot favourite, Super, and Brenloch into the places. The unlucky runner, however, was the imported horse, Super, who was very unlucky in the running. Revivre and Lady Myrtle led into the straight from Brenloch, Baccarat, Offender. Deseado, and Super, and in the run to the post Revivre stayed on to win well from the unlucky Super, who changed his course half way down the straight. Super was finishing faster than anything else in the race. Brenloch was third and then came Lady Myrtle, Outlook, Roscarea and Sly Gold. Sunshine Bay and Mesalliance fought out a good finish in the Glen Hurdles and Sunshine Bay prevailed by a head after being hampered by Mesalliance nearing the post. Vassilikos was third with heads separating Glad Fox, Nepeta and Incision. Detain lost his rider at the first fence. After rain overnight, the meeting was held in fine weather. Except for a soft patch that was cutting out near the five furlongs, the track was in good order, but not fast. Rain in the morning affected the attendance, which was much smaller than usual. The totalisator handled £157,027 10s, compared with £172,029 10s, a decrease of £15,002. > Remaining results:— Rimutaka Hack Handicap, of £750; seven furlongs.—l 4-14 Revivre, 7.9 (W. F.
