COMPLETION OF HAAST PASS ROAD IS URGED

[SPECIAL TO STAR] WESTPORT, This Day. Emphasising the importance of the completion of the Haast Pass road to connect South Westland with Otago, Mr F. Boustridge, Mayor of Greymouth, said at the conference of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association yesterday that a large area of land was ready to be opened up for farming. In some instances the present settlers’ only means of access was by aeroplane. To take cattle from some areas in the area which the road would open up to the railhead meant a trek of hundreds of miles through rough country, said Mr Boustridge. A remit urging the completion of the road was adopted by the conference.
