The jungle has closed in to obliterate* the signs of war in American Samoa, according to sailors on the Sonoma, which arrive® at Sydney recently. Buried under creepers and undergrowth and rotting into the ground are cars and trucks and piles of assorted equipment. In one overgrown spot near Pago Pago an inquisitive man recently stumbled over 8000 drums of high octane spirit. Australians there are shipping of the material to Australia. The Sonoma brought the first consignment—some bulldozers and spare parts.
An Adelaide visitor to London revealed the hobby of a wealthy Australian woman, Mrs R. T. Melrose, owner of a famous 9000-acre fapp in the State of South Australia, which has been in her family’s possession for a century. She breeds snow-white deer—and kangaroos. About ten years ago her late husband turned loose on the huge estate a w “ l J e buck kangaroo, captured in the Broken Hill district. It mated with normal coloured does. Now, at last, the white strain has completely dominated the fawn, and there is- a fine herd of 40 white specimens. Some will probably be seen in.the course of a year or two in the world s chief zoclogical gardens. —The Seeker
