Runanga And The Royal Visit
Sir, —I trust that the decision of the 15 people who voted against making a grant, towards the Royal visit does not express the opinion of the majority of the people of Runanga. Nevertheless the visit of the Royal Family will be an outstanding event, despite the lack of support from Runanga. It is to be regretted however, that those fifteen people begrudge a contribution towards allowing the children of Runanga the privilege of enjoying the celebrations being organs ised. Seeing their King and Queen might impress upon those young minds the extent of the freedom we enjoy under the British flag. There, is one country which . does not allow its inhabitants to leave its shores/but I will wager that if its ruler was making a similar visit to that of our King, we would not have the option of declining to contribute towards the. expenses of himself and his retinue. In spending money to make the Royal tour a memorable one, we are only expressing our appreciation of the unbounded freedom the Royal Family symbolises, parti-; cularly that freedom which allows people to emigrate from their native land to countries offering better opportunities. Yours, etc., FANFARE. Greymouth, Oct. 13.
