SMART GALLOP BY MAGICAL IN RICCARTON TRIAL

[SPECIAL TO STAR] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The outside of the course proper at Riccarton was available yesterday for horses engaged at the Wellington meeting. . The first to gallop on it was Magical, who, under a light weight, covered five furlongs in his usual free style in 1.0 4-5, the last four in 48 3-5. He has drawn 20 at the barrier in the Shorts Handicap oh Saturday, but such a smart beginner should soon gain a favourable position. Magical’s stablemates, Maryburn and Musselman were paired in a useful gallop over a mile in 1.43 4-5, the first half in 51 2-5. Maryburn had a slight advantage at the post, but Musselman held on well and indicated that he will do better over more ground that he has recently tackled.

Coral Arc’s Task

Coral Arc was let off with a strong six-furlong task in 1.19, the last four in 51. He will be again ridden by D. F. Coombe, who was seen to advantage on him at Washdyke last week. Bruce and Royal Tan kept abreast throughout a mile gallop in 1.44 1-5, the first half in 53 2-5, finishing abreast. The former is expected to be on hand for the second day’s racing at Trentham. . ... Corofin and Ballochbuie, joined by Military Chief at the end of two furlongs, traversed seven furlongs in 1.29 3-5, the last four in. 50 4-5. Resolute evecuted a working gallop over half a mile on the trial grass in 54sec, and Balkis finished clear of Advent and John o’ London at the end of six furlongs on the -same track in 1.17. . Caronia ran half a mile in 50 2-5, and Agnes Pearl finished in front of Robinfaye, with Boson two lengths away, in the same time. Citril was given a useful round on the plough, coming home the last three furlongs in 37 2-5, and Kartikeya followed over half a mile in 50 2-5.

Banshee Injured

A most unusual incident, which might easily have caused a serious mishap, occurred after Banshee had covered a furlong on the trial grass. A rabbit rushed across the track just in front of her and in suddenly swerving, she encountered a trestle placed across the inside of the track and jumped oyer it on to the plough. Banshee completed her task on the latter track, and when brought in was found to have suffered a flesh wound on a hind quarter, caused by her contact with the trestle, but this is not thought likely to prevent her racing at Orari next Saturday. Her trainer, F. D. Jones, said that in his long experience at Riccarton he had not heard of a similar occurrence. Riccarton horses which left for Trentham last night were Caronia, Resolute, Glad Fox, Golden Amber, Citril, Kartikeya, Primitive and Robinfaye. The Riverton-trained Excellency travelled with them. Flying Sovereign, Indian Dawn, Helio and . Julius Caesar went north last Monday night, along with the Wingatui horses, Grand Coulee, Revivre, Blanket, Frances, Super, The Grate, and Detain, and R. E. McLellan’s pair, Pride of Mossburn and Signal Officer. Those travelling north tonight will be Coral Arc, Ballochbuie, Maryburn, Musselman, Magical, Royal Tan, Corofln, Military Chief, Ballochbuie. Bosun and Flying Faye. Finigin will not make the trip.
