SPORTING Victory Peal May Have Chance At Victoria Park

One of the West Coast candidates for honours at the. forthcoming spring meeting of the Greymouth Trotting Club Victory Peal ryop the sprint event at the matinee meeting last week at Aictoria Park in impressive style. ■Owner-trainer G. AV. Nelson obviously. has the son of Grattan Loyal and a Four Chimes mare in hrst-class order tor his engagements during the Labour week-end, Ins Vl , be in the Midland Handicap, of two miles, on the first of the meeting. Victory Peal is not always a reliable beginner, but he stays wel and is adept in heavy going.

It will be recalled that at the Greymputh-rWestland fixture at Victoria Park on March 29 of this year Victory Peal finished second to Max Grattan over two miles on a very heavy track. Though he had no chance with Max Grattan, after breaking in the middle stages, Victory Peal outclassed the remainder of • the field, which included Sirocco, Grand Scott and John Halifax, and he showed undoubted stamina. Knight Bar was another impressive winner at Victoria Park last Saturday. He did not beat much, but he did his work attractively after making a slow but safe beginning. In the final event he again left the barrier smoothly, if slowly, and he beat all but Victory Peal. Knight Bar is by Gold Bar —Rose Laurel, and though he has always shown speed on the tracks he has usually ruined his chance by failing to begin correctly. Trainer T. Gardyne has him ready for the races and if he can begin on terms with the rest of the field he may repay the patient policy that has been adopted with him. The times recorded on Saturday gave no real indication of the ability of the winners, but both Victory Peal and Knight Bar were impressive in the final event, the last half of which was run in 1.9 3-5. A newcomer to the ranks of Greymouth-trained pacers is the aged Sandydale gelding, Tolan, trained by W, J. Davidson. He showed some speed in the novice race at the trials but did not carry on. Pounanau, which started in the novice race at the trial at Victoria Park is a three-year-old filly by Josedale Dictator from Lady Travis. She is owned and trained by P. H. Russell, of Arahura.

Two of J. C. McClure’s.candidates, Motto and Patti Dale, attracted attention at Victoria Park by their forward condition. They finished sec-? ond and third to Sandbird in ' the principal event, and if they make the expected progress during the next 10 days or so they should add interest to their races at the Greymouth meeting. ' The best of H. Kennedy’s team at the trials was Barbara Woods, who showed considerable promise in running second to Young Neen in the event for unhoppled trotters. Of the others Skyhook refused resolutely to pace, and Lady Kilwinning showed little speed.

The Dolomite —Quinola mare, Maggiore, owned by Mr H. S. Dowling of Blackball, has foaled a bay colt to Royal Chief at the Wanaka Stud. This is her second foal, her first, also a colt by Royal Chief, having to be destroyed when he was injured a few months after he was foaled. Maggiore raced last in the 1945-46 season when in seven starts she recorded two thirds, but in the previous season she won two hurdle races, one at Trentham and the other at Ashburton.

Trentham Scratchings Scratchings yesterday for the first day of the Wellington spring meeting on Saturday were:—Wainui Handicap, Diana Reynard at 10.45 a.m.; Desert Gold Stakes, Beeswax, at 10.50 a.m.— (P.A.)

G. Holmes Memorial Handicap at the Methven Trotting Club’s meeting on October 2. Trainer E. A. Berry will race her at Greymouth this month.

Useful Pacer Red Flight gave an attractive display in winning at Washdyke last Saturday ir> the fast time of 3.17 1-5. By Red Shadow.
