NAVY TO SERVICE WEATHER STATIONS IN THE ISLANDS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Royal New Zealand Navy, has agreed to take over certain of the shipping commitments at present carried out by the Ministry of Works. Announcing this today, as chairman of the Naval Board, the Minister .of Defence (Mr F. Jones) said the commitments mainly concerned were those connected with the servicing of Government meteorological and ionosphere stations in the Kermadec group and Campbell Island. This arrangement will relieve the Ministry of Works of the expenditure involved in meeting these shipping commitments, and the Navy has arranged to combine these requirements with naval operations and training. H.M.N.Z.S. Kiwi, which is now undergoing repairs at Auckland, is expected to undertake the first naval visit to Campbell Island in November.
