Customs Raid On Pearl Smugglers At Auckland
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Hundreds of strings of Japanese pearls were confiscated by customs officials on the waterfront today as Australian soldiers and members of the troopship Westralia’s crew tried to smuggle them ashore. It was the biggest customs raid in Auckland for a long time. Officials were reticent to discuss the raid, but admitted that a “number of men” had been searched. In several cases the offenders were summarily fined. There will be no court proceedings. “We have got a small mountain of the things,” said one official, referring to this and previous hauls.
