“Anything which parents have not learned from experience, they can now learn from their children.”— Weekly Wrotearies, Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. $ * v *
“The honourable member for Patea thought he smelt corruption,” said Mr C. L. Carr (Government, Timaru) in the House of Representatives. “ ‘Wheresoever the carcass is, there will the vultures be gathered together.’” Knowing Mr Carr’s inherent sense of fairness, we presume that this applies also to the Government carcass that happens every so olten. $ *
There was plenty of “atmosphere at a Greymouth meeting held last evening to discuss arrangements for the Royal visit, but most of it was tobacco smoke. Of 38 people in the small Grey Power Board meeting room, all but 10 smoked almost continuously and after an hour and a half the room was filled with a thick haze which was obviously causing distress to the 10 non-smokers, included three women. When the meeting terminated there was a auick rush for fresh air. «
Just to show how vital their existence is to the community, members of the- Legislative Council talked overtime last week, mainly about themselves. Mr P. J. O’Kane (Wairoa) did something that should be prohibited by law. The Council, he said, was a colourful Chamber. There were representatives of the Maori and the pakeha, and, with respect, he would suggest that that provided the brown and the white; and the Council, also had the Black and the Brindle. It had no Lords of Appeal, but it did have ladies of appeal and also a Bishop. “We have,” he said (just to rub it in), “good Grounds for continuation.” If that’s how he wants it, it’s , quite O’Kane with us; but next time we prefer to Waite for an aPerrytif, which Briggs us back to a topic that has begun to Paul — what to do about the councillors. We can’t Campbell with any Ryall confidence, sb perhaps it’s better to let ’em rest.
