£l000 Gift To Grey Church By Local Resident

. A gift of £lOOO by Mrs S. B. White to St Paul’s Methodist Church, Greymouth, for the establishment of a fund which will be known as “The Burnett White Memorial Fund,” was announced at the service in St Paul’s last evening by the Rev. H. L. Fiebig, 8.A., of Christchurch, connexional secretary for the Methodist Church of New Zealand. The fund will be used for the. maintenance of church property. Mr W. D. Panckhurst, accepting the gift, expressed the gratitude of the people of the church for the generous gift and referred to. the lengthy service which the late Mr White gave as trustee of the church. Mr Fiebig, who conducted the services in St Paul’s yesterday, took as the theme of his sermon last evening, “The Church as a Sanctuary.” One vital function of the Church, he said, was to provide a refuge from the stress of life and the turmoil of the world; a place of quietness and rest where peace and faith and courage might be found. The needs of the individual, he said, could not be met in isolation, but when the worshipping community met in the sanctuary. ' The choir, conducted by Mr R. W. Connolly, sang the anthem “Light in Darkness.” The organist was Mr Lester Roberts.
