SENTENCES REDUCED AND VARIED BY COURT OF APPEAL

The Court of Appeal, comprising uhe Chief Justice (Sir Humphrey O Leary: Mr Justice Kennedy, Mr Justice son and Mr Justice Hutchison today gave judgment in a number of appeals by prisoners against their sentences. "Kenneth Crest Bell, an Amenca.i seaman, who on September 9 194. ;,p--ceaJed against a sentence or six moikhs imprisonment with hard laboui, to be followed by 12 months' reformative attention given by Mr Justice Gresson a Auckland on June 22, on a chatge oi theft of high-speed drills, had his sentence reduced to 12 months reformatlVEenjanfinoTainui Davis and Cecil Te Whui who were both sentenced at Auckland cn July 1, 1948,, by Mr Justice Finlay on charges of breaking, and theft, each had their sentences varied to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour, to be followed by tluee vears’ reformative detention. The Court did not reduce the length of the sentences, but varied the type of imP Frederick John Lloyd, who was sentenced at Wellington on July 14, 1948 bv Mr Justice Christie on a charge of breaking, entering and theft, had his sentence varied to two years and a halt reformative detention. , Charles Edward Hynes, sentenced at Wellington on May 9, 1948 by Mr Justice Fair on a charge of theft, had his sentence varied to imprisonment with hard labour for, one year and a half, to be followed by one year and a half’ of reformative detention. Robert Grant Westoby, sentenced on August 10, 1948, at Gisborne, by Mr Justice Cornish for receiving stolen goods, had his sentence reduced to imprisonment with hard labour tor 12 months. __ ~ . The Court dismissed 15 other appeals against sentence.
