MILK BOARD TO SEEK REMOVAL OF CREAM RESTRICTIONS

(F.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day A request that the Government reconsider the rationing of cream is to be made to the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer) by the Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board. This was decided, after a spirited discussion, at a meeting of the board yesterday. The restrictions on the sale of cream as they affect Christchurch were first mentioned at the meeting by Mr R.-G. Brown, who said that men , including returned men,who bought milk rounds had a pistol held at their heads. They were told by customers that the previous vendors left cream, and if they did not do the same, changes would occur. “There are more than bu,uou houses in Christchurch, and it would be a pretty good guess how many get cream every week-’end,” Mr Brown said. “You can’t blame the milkman or the consumer. Three years have gone since the war ended. Britain is getting a full quota of butter and Canada, where there is no rationing is also getting New Zealand buttei . With more than 60,000 houses in Christchurch, the inspectors did not catch more than 2 per cent, of offenders, Mr Brown said.-“ Let us make all the milkman honest.” He moved that the board write to the Minister suggesting that cream rationing be abolished. If the sale of cream was made legal, no more cream would be sold than was sold illegally at present, said Mr W J Cowles. “To-day we are supplying Canada with butter, where it is unrationed, yet we have taken ther cut on our original ration, he said. “Let’s help Britain get dollars some other way. Let’s get rid of these irksome restrictions.” “There is in force a rationing order,” Mr Kitson said. “We say it doesn’t do this and doesn’t do that, but clo we know? How much do we really know about how it affects Britain? Aren’t we saying that people in Christchurch are dishonest. Mr J. E. Tait moved an amendment that the board ask that the regulations be either enforced or dispensed with. „ Mr Brown: Could we enforce them? It is not humanly possible. The amendment was lost, and the i motion carried.
