BASKETBALL Convent O.G. A lias Proved A Consistent Team

The West Coast Basketball Association concluded its season last Sat-] urday when the final matches in all grades were played. The standard of play was high. ' The Convent O.G. A team, which won both the knock-out and the senior competition, has played consis-, tently well throughout the season and its success was well deserved. The! team is not one of brilliant individualists; its combination has'contributed largely to its success. j The standard of play in all grades, this season has shown a great deal ofimprovement and the association feelsj justified in applying for promotion to second grade New Zealand status. It is hoped that next season more country districts will enter teams. If there are more than 100 teams in the association, a junior as well as a senior team can be entered in the New Zealand tournament. This season the association had 53 teams under its jurisdiction. ,

Juniors Play Well

The combined Reef ton-Greymouth junior team, which played Hokitika on Saturday, gave a good display, with the four Reefton players working in well with the Greymouth players. The standard of play in this match augurs well for junior play on the West Coast next season.

The Buller B team, which played a West Coast B team at Greymouth last Saturday, possessed a. hard working centre third in M. McDonald, F. Morgan and N. Ledgard whose passing and court work was of a high standard. In the Buller forwards A. Class played well but all three need to open out their play to meet the ball.

N. Henderson, of the Coast defence, took advantage of the weaknesses in the Buller forward third, and she was well supported by N. Thomas. A. Levy (Buller) broke up many of the Coast forwards’ movements but superior play by the Coast forwards really gave the West Coast victory. Referees’ Examinations On October' 16, several West Coast referees will undergo their practical examinations. The examiner will be Mrs Cairney, of Christchurch. Mrs Clarke, Mrs Mellett and Mrs Newton will take their practical examinations, while Mrs Rodger, Miss Grogan and Miss Stuart will take the New Zealand practical examinations. Should the latter three be successful, they will be entitled to control matches at the New Zealand tournament at Dunedin next year.
