Socialists And Monarchists Agree On Spain

(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 7. A British Foreign Office spokesman announced that Spanish Monarchists and Socialists in exile had concluded an agreement on future policy. Reuter’s diplomatic correspondent says the agreement renews hope among General Franco’s opponents that the eventual replacement of the Franco regime by a truly democratic Government, in sympathy with the ideas of Western Union, is not impossible. Copies of the agreement between the Spanish Monarchists and Spanish Socialists in exile, headed by Mr Indalecio Priesto, were handed to the United States, British and Benelux embassies and the French Foreign Office, says Reuter's Paris correspondent. Restoration of Monarchy Under the agreement the Socialists agreed to the restitution of the constitutional monarchy in Spain when a democratic regime replaces the Franco regime.

The Associated Press Paris correspondent says the agreement calls upon the Big Three Western Powers to make good their pledge to back a democratic regime in Spain at a time when the United States might revise its anti-Franco policy. Reuter’s diplomatic correspondent says that Peru has informed Britain she intends to reinstal her .ambassador in Madrid. It is reliably reported that the Argentinian Ambassador has already been reinstalled. American in Madrid

Reuter’s Madrid correspondent quotes Mr James Farley, formerly president of the United States Democratic Party, as saying, after an interview with General Franco: “I expressed my personal hope that satisfactory relations would be renewed between Spain and the United States.” Mr Farley would not say whether he had discussed military relations between Spain and America. He said that he had told General Franco that all the Western European countries should co-operate, including those in the Iberian Peninsula.
