SCENIC RESERVES ON THREE LAKES ROUTE: POSSIBLE INCREASE

With a view to having further lands reserved for scenic purposes the West Coast. Automobile Association's scenic committee traversed the Three Lakes route (Lakes Brunner, Poerua and Lady Lake), accompanied by the Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr H. N. Lawrey) and the Conservator of Forests (Mr R. B. Collett). Prior to the Second World War representations were made to the Government with a view to preserving for all time the bush still bordering the route which, apart from Punakaiki, is the main attraction for tourists visiting Greymouth Following those representations certain land of great value, from the scenic point of view, was secured by the joint, action of the two departments. Moreover, in pursuance of the State Forest policy of preserving bush along scenic highway, the bush was excluded from milling for a distance of several miles on the Greenstone-Inchbonnie-Lady Lake road. In addition numerous areas of land which still remained in the hands of the Lands Department were proclaimed scenic reserves.

On the trip last week discussion took place at several points where it -was considered the scenery should be preserved, if possible, and these matters will receive the full consideration of the interested parties. Discussions also took place in connection with the Arnold river and the ultimate restoration of Lake Brunner, as far as can be, to its original appearance.

On the western side of the lake, thousands of acres of bush have been milled and milling operations are still in progress there. Nevertheless, in the absence of fires in the cut-out areas the second growth will quickly fill, the gaps made by the bush workings and the ultimate appearance of the wooded hills 'stretching to the horizon would be little different from the view of 85 years ago, while any of the worth-while farm lands on the flats could be farmed without detracting from the view of the hills.
