ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL WEST COAST DEFEATS BULLER IN EMMS SHIELD MATCH

In a return match for the Emms Shield, played at Westport on Saturday, the Westland Football Association’s .senior representative team retained the shield by defeating Buller by three goals to one. The match was played in ideal conditions and was one of the best exhibitions given by the Westland team for some time. The score was a good indication of. the run of the lAiy. „ , . J. Roach, at centre-forward, scored all three goals for the Westland team. N.Z. OUTCLASSED BY AUSTRALIA IN TEST (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 29. In ideal playing conditions at Lancaster Park yesterday, the Australian Association football team easily beat New Zealand on the second test by 7 goals to 0. The winning margin was one goal better than the drubbing given New Zealand in the first test. Australia, if New Zealand did not come up to expectations, gave the crowd of about 4000 something to be pleased about and the side’s display was right up to international standard. The Australians gave an exemplary display of ball control, anticipation, cohesion, and initiative and all at a speed that the New Zealanders found embarrassingly beyond them. The Australians had control soon after the kick-off, and they appeared to tighten or relax pressure at will. They wasted few passes in the whole 90 minutes and they collected New Zealand’s as well. The forwards cracked the reputedly rocklike New Zealand defence with ease. At the other end the New Zealand forwards found such impenetrable opposition that only about three times did they look like scoring. Seldom has a New Zealand side been seen to worse advantage. Faced with a strong Canierbury eleven, New Zealand Universities did well to be only beaten by the odd goal in five, in the curtain-raiser to the test match. The standard of play showed taht University football has made remarkable progress in recent years.
