Prime Minister Experts More State Control

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This. Day. An assurance that legislation limiting the rights of appeal of public servants was not contemplated at present was given by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, opening the annual conference of the New Zealand Public Service Association today. The Prime Minister added that such legislation might be considered later. In that event, the first step would be to consult the Public,Service Commission and the association.

Mr Fraser asked the conference, as the parliament of the public service, to consider the proposal, however. He referred to the “forcible recommendations” of Ihe commission regarding the proposed legislation and said they had been put forward to help to ensure that the best people were appointed to particular positions. If the Government expanded as it had done, and it would inevitably continue to do, it would be faced with getting the best, possible service.
