WINTRY BLAST IN AUSTRALIA: HEAVY FALLS OF SNOW
(Rec. 2 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A sudden return to wintry weather, with hail, rain, sleet and snow, is reported from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Snow fell last night over many thousands of square miles and in some areas was the heaviest ever known. The first snowfalls for over 40 years were reported from districts north and west of Parkes with fields extending as far as Dubbo. At midnight residents of Orange were ski-ing in the main street and snow battles were in progress. South Australia had the heaviest snowfalls in its history, extending over 1500 square miles in the central and northern parts of the Sate. In Sydney the temperature dropped from 59 to 49deg. in an hour and fierce westerlies caused damage. Many country districts have had good" falls of rain and more snow and rain are forecast for the southern tablel a n ds today.
