(Rec. 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 23. Thousands of holiday-makers saw the Mayor of Brighton start the Brighton-to-Glasgow six-days’ cycling marathon. Over 70 riders are in the race, which takes them through London, Newcastle and Edinburgh. Ronald Baker, of Britain, was first, half a wheel in front of Harold Johnson, of Australia, at the end of the first stage of 661 miles, which was covered in 2hrs 43min 57sec.

The cyclists will spend the night in an underground shelter at Clapham South before starting the next stage.
