Greymouth Jockey Club Reports Satisfactory Year

The president (Mr J. W. Hannan) will present the following report to the annual meeting of the Greymouth Jockey Club on September 1:— “It gives me pleasure to refer to the fact that the profit and loss account discloses a fairly satisfactory profit. It will be noted, however, that the success of the club's farming operations substantially contributed to that result. The January meeting was successful but the February meeting though favoured with perfect weather, resulted in a slight profit only, notwithstanding that £450 more in stakes was paid than at the January meeting. On the May meeting there was a slight loss due solely to the particularly bad weather conditions on that occasion.

“Until such time as some relief in taxation is afforded racing clubs, there is little prospect of clubs in districts wherein totalisator investments are necessarily limited making profits sufficient to enable them to do any substantial improvements to their courses or amenities for their patrons. “I desire on behalf of all club members to commend the chairman of the course committee, Mr Herb Moore, and the members of that committee in effecting the many course improvements carried out by them during the year. Members present at the May "meeting would have noted the widening, along the lawn, of the track by the removal and reinstatement of the fence —which work is now being continued to the entrance to the straight. This, though the most apparent, is but a portion of the work personally and very efficiently carried out by the members of the course committee and their voluntary assistants. “During the year 39 pew members were elected. “I regret to record the deaths of three Club members during the year, viz., Messrs H, D. James, R. E. Groom

and A. Hill. The sympathy of club members is extended to their relatives.

“As is disclosed by the convening notice proposals as to amendments to the club’s rules will in compliance with resolutions passed at last year’s annual meeting be brought forward at this annual meeting for the consideration of members.”
