OBITUARY Mr Lewis Matthews

The death occurred yesterday afternoon of Mr Lewis Matthews, Shakespeare street, Greymouth, after a lengthy illness. He was born in Huddersfield’, England. 71 years ago. Mr Matthews came to New Zealand with his wife and family and lived at Petone. He had lived at Greymouth for the past three years. Mr Matthews was predeceased by his wife, and is survived by six daughters, Mrs C. King (Greymouth), Mrs W. Mulrew (Lower Hutt), Mrs H. McLeod (Cress Creek), Mrs L. Churchouse (putaruru), Mrs H. Doherty (Marton), and Miss K. Matthews (Wellington), and one son, Mr J. Matthews (Petone) . . The funeral will take place at the Taita cemetery, Hutt JValley, on Friday. Mr Arthur H. Milner The death occurred at Greyinouth this morning of Mr Arthur Henry Milner, single, at the age of 82 years. Mr Milner was born at Wigan. England, and came to New Zealand in 1889. He was a watchmaker and jeweller and after working in various towns throughout New Zealand he finally established his own business in Greymouth in 1895, and he continued to conduct it until 1945. Mr Milner was a keen angler and was interested in most sports. The funeral will take place at the Karoro cemetery on Thursday. Mr F. W. Johnston (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Mr Frederick William Johnston, who died yesterday morning at the age of 78, had been a member of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) since 1904. and was legal adviser to that body since he joined it. He was a member of the firm of Johnston, Mills, and White, and in recent years in Rangiora was a partner in the firm of Johnston, Kippenberger, and Frazer. Apart from his practice, Mr Johnston had many interests, chief of which was probably motoring. In 1921 when the South Island Motor Union was formed he became its first president. For many, years Mr Johnston was a member of the Canterbury Jockey Club and the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club. He owned several well known pacers and trotters and was a member of the committee of the trotting club. Mr Johnston was a member of the council of the New Zealand Boxing Association for 25 years and for several years was on the New Zealand Athletic Council. He was also a past president of the New Zealand Bowling Council.
