COLOGNE CELEBRATES 700TH ANNIVERSARY OF FAMED CATHEDRAL
(Recd. 10.5 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. laOver 250,000 worshippers thronged the streets to see the splendid, solemn ceremonies and celebrating of the seventh centenary of the Cologne Cathedral. High Catholic Church princes from 14 countries took part in the reopening of the cathedral after it had miraculously survived in the midst of the battlefield. Cardinal Frings (Germany) said Holy Mass at the Cathedral’s high altar for the first time in five years and the Pope’s Legate, Cardinal Clemens Micara, blessed over 100,000 who crowded into the square and streets outside the building. Cardinal Frings said the world was standing at the point of decision—whether it would suffer new atrocities and the madness of a new war or whether it would live in peace. The Hungarian Government is reported to have refused Cardinal Josef Mindszenty, the Hungarian Primate, permission to leave the countiy to attend the celebrations, states Reuter’s correspondent in the Vatican City. The German news agency reports that Bishop personal representative of Cardinal Preysing, Bishop of Berlin, has been unable to obtain an exit permit from Berlin to attend the celebrations.
