RAIL-CAR SERVICE: MINISTER’S COMMENT ON BREAK-DOWNS

The rail-car that was destroyed by fire near Poerua last year is now’ in the process of being rebuilt at the Addington workshops, but the date of the completion of the work is uncertain. This information was given the Westland Progress League last evening in a letter from Mr F. Hackett, acting for the Minister of Railways, Mr R. Semple, who at the time was visiting Australia.

The Minister added that he was aware that breakdowns had occurred but stated that such happenings were inevitable and were not peculiar to any particular mode of transport. Departmental officers endeavoured to maintain the rail-cars at a high standard of efficiency, but were faced with shortages of spare parts owing to the inability of the British manufacturers to maintain regular supplies, he added. The servicing of the rail-cars receives close attention and there need be no apprehension regarding the probable. life of the vehicles, he concluded. “The burnt rail-car, I am told, is still lying in the yard at Addington,” commented a member, who also pointed out that Mr Semple had indicated that there was no shortage of spare parts.
