GENERAL NEWS Hospital Conference At Greymouth

Representatives of all * hospital boards on the West Coast will attend the conference to be held at Greymouth tomorrow evening ,to discuss the appointment ' of a full-time radiologist and a pathologist to serve all of the hospitals in the province. The proposal emanated from the Buller board, which suggested that one officer should have his headquarters at Westport and one at Greymouth. A counter -.proposal was made by the Grey board that both officers should be stationed at Greymouth, as the logical centre, and it is likely that tomorrow night’s discussion will centre around this point, rather than the making of the appointments.

Wharf Union and Communists No swing from last year’s control of the Auckland Watersiders’ Union is shown in the results of the election by secret ballot of the union’s executive, all members of last year’s committee who stood, being re-elected. The only member of last year’s executive who did not stand was Mr N. Donaldson, who successfully contested the vice-presidency against Mr Alex Drennan. Two of the nine members of last year’s executive are mmbers of the Communist Party. , In some trade union circles, the defeat of Mr Drennan is now regarded not so much as a vote against the Communists as a personal vote. Mr Drennan failed to retain office by only about 36 votes. —(P-A.) Railway Worker Injured When two railway jiggers collided head-on near Cora Lynn on Saturday night, the rider of one of the jiggers suffered head injuries. They carried Mr Ferguson for two miles on the jigger to the Cora Lynn station. Mr Ferguson’s condition was reported to be satisfactory last evening. Humane Killing \

Captive bolt instruments for stunning cattle before their slaughter would be installed in several New Zealand freezing works as soon as they became available from overseas, said Mr R. H. James, inspector for the Palmerston North branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals a few days ago. He said the campaign was meeting with the utmost support from the industry.

The Acting-Coroner (Mr A. J. Hustler) presided. The chief witness, Ronald Harris, of Matawai, who was standing in a group two feet from deceased, said: “About 2.30 I heard a noise like a bullet and saw a ball of lightning coming towards us. I saw it strike deceased on his head, and he fell instantly to the ground. The ball struck and killed a dog. It broke into pieces, and skipped about the ground, knocking down everyone in the vicinity. When it came to me, I seemed to lose control of my legs and fell to the ground.”—(P.A.) No one likes being soft soaped—much! Ah! But when you think of laundry work—there’s where plenty of soft soaping comes in. The Westland Laundry uses only the finest laundry soap. That’s one of the reasons why our laundry work is so snowy. And there’s something else — all water used passes through a Zeolite water softener which removes all hardness and impurities from the water. All clothes are hygienically washed and sterilised in seven different waters. Phone 136. Depot. Sam McAra, Mackay street. —Advt.
