£100,000 DAMAGE IN OUTBREAK OF FIRE AT HOBART
(Rec. 10.50 a.m.) HOBART, This Day
Damage estimated at well over £lOO,OOO was caused by a fire which destroyed the greater part of Ocean Pier and adjacent buildings. A nearby storage shed, which was completely destroyed, contained apples valued at £50,000, consigned to the British Ministry of Food.
Ocean Pier was built 30 years ago, costing £lOO,OOO, and fire men cut a five-yard break through it in order to prevent the spread of the fire. Thousands of sightseers watched the fire from the three wharves at the pier and at one stage had to be driven back with fire-hoses. The fire is described as Hobart’s worst outbreak.
