CRICKET HOKITIKA DEFEATS BLACKBALL IN WINGHAM CUP FINAL

Hokitika scored an easy first innings win over Blackball in the district final match for the Wingham Cup. which was played at Cass square, Hokitika, yesterday. Hokitika' won by 113 runs. Some good scores were made by the Hokitika batsmen, the team being dismissed for 143 runs. J. Robertson batted consistently to make the top-score of 45, while A. Adamson (33) and F. Stapleton (17) contributed valuable runs. W. Hay was not out 14. S. Fleming maintained his average bowling well to take four wickets for 64 runs. W. Vincent was also consistent. He took three for 47, while F. Pascoe took one for 15. After recent good displays against local teams, Blackball was expected fully to extend the southern team, but the batsmen failed. The team, in its first innings, was dismissed for only 30 runs. Hokitika bowlers were in top form and, with a lot of assistance from the concrete wicket, were never mastered. Stoop gave an excellent performance, keeping an accurate length. He took no fewer than seven wickets for only 11 rims. Parker also bowled well to take the three other wickets at a cost of only 15 runs. Blackball followed on and made some improvement on its first innings display. At stumps six Blackball wickets had fallen for 69 runs. F. Pascoe batted solidly to be 29 not out, while R. Nuttall (13) and S. Fleming (11) also added valuable runs. Bowling for Hokitika W. Brunner .and Runanga, played at Brunner yesterday, resulted in a draw, both teams scoring the same number of runs in both innings. Batting first, Brunner made 59, the topscorer being J. EASY WIN FOR AUSTRALIAN WOMEN The visiting Australian women’s cricket team had little difficulty in beating Canterbury when the match at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, ended on Saturday. On the first day the Australians had scored 267 for four wickets declared, and Canterbury, m its first innings, had lost five wickets for 71. On Saturday the Canterbury total was carried to 145 and, following on the heme team was dismissed, foi 93,’ Australia thus winning by an innings and 29 runs. Canterbury was outplayed m every department of the game, but seveial of the local players, in particular V. Berg, F. Pentecost, P. Blackler and V. Russell, showed distinct promise. After the match the manager of the Australian team, Mrs Mummery, said that V. Berg had showed more promise- than any other player the Australians had seen in New Zealand.
