Women’s Institutes

Moana W.l. There was a record attendance at the annual meeting of the Moana Women’s Institute. The retiring president, secretary and vice-president were each presented with a gift. It was decided to support an appeal for help for CORSO. Final arrangements were made for the birthday party on March 20. Mrs Price was the winner of the points prize and Mrs Dreckman gained highest points for the best bloom. The monthly competition winners were: Mrs Mumford 1, Mesdames Molloy and Malcolm equal 2; best bloom, Mesdames Mumford and Feary; wandering shilling, Mrs E. Dense. Barrytown W.l. The monthly meeting of the Barrytown Women’s Institute took place at the residence of Mrs Kennedy. Mrs Rowe presided over a fair attendance. The motto for the month was, “Labour is sweet when hands are willing,” and the roll call was “An emergency tea for an unexpected visitor.” The monthly competition, a patchwork apron, was won by Mrs Kennedy. Other competitions resulted as follows: —Flowers, Mrs Duffield; guessing competition, Mrs Johnston; plant competition, Mrs Wafer. The hostess was Mrs Kennedy. Personal Notes Mrs J. O’Leary travelled by this morning’s express for Christchurch. Mrs R. Adcock left this morning on return to Christchurch. Miss E. Flaherty, of the office staff of the Grey Hospital Board, has been appointed secretary to the medical superintendent of the Westland Hospital, Hokitika. DAY OF PRAYER . The Church of Christ was well filled with a representative gathering for the opening session of the Women’s Day of Prayer . Mr: A . Fear, in the chair, and Mrs Truman, welcomed those present. The programmme was of a devotional character, special prayers being' offered for the Empire, missions and for the cistressed. Mrs F. Purnell, of California, in an interesting address on '‘American Women and Missions” gave information, which was new and varied concerning America’s home and foreign mission work. The solo “Just for Today” was sung by Miss Betty Essex.
