PROPOSAL TO EXTEND PLUNKET VISITS IN SOUTH WESTLAND

A proposal to extend the Blanket, nurses’ visits in South Westland and to include Wataroa and Waiho was discussed at the quarterly meeting of the Greymouth Plunket Society on Wednesday. Following a report from Mrs Nolan (Okuru) stating that she had written to the Minister of Health (Miss Howard) asking for assistance 'towards the cost of air travel to that area, it was decided to await a reply from the Minister and to obtain further information from Okuru as to the probable number of visits required annually, before taking further steps.

Reporting on the progress made in opening up new areas, the charge nurse (Miss Pearce) stated that the Hokitika committee was prepared to employ a nurse for an extra day each month to cover the outlying districts, and that she had arranged for a monthly visit to be made to Wataroa. The Barrytown Women’s Institute had offered, its assistance in that area. A trial visit would be paid to Waiuta this month. In order to service the 'Stillwater district adequately she suggested that it be taken into the 'Brunner sub-branch territory. This would make fortnightly visits necessary. The Brunner Relegate. (Mrs Coates) undertook to consult her committee and report back to Greymouth.

The annual collection in Cobden has been completed, Mrs Nimmo having handed in £6 0s 6d. Mrs Burrow who canvassed another area in Cobden collected £5 4s 9d.

Only three sub-branches of the nine, in the area controlled by the Greymouth Plunket Society attended the meeting. Brunner was represented by Mrs Coates, Kumara (Mesdames Teen and Stratford), and Blackball (Mrs Chilton). Mrs F. M. Dennehy presided and Greymouth members present were: Mesdames Gillespie, Boustridge, Taylor, Kehoe, Boucher, Clarke, Pfahlert, Leahy, O’Brien, Kitchingham, Parfitt, Walters, Steel, Miss Anderson, and the secretary, Mrs McCarthy.
