DAIRY INDUSTRY LAW: INQUIRY COMMITTEE SET UP

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 12. “The effect of some aspects of the existing legislation in relation to cooperative dairy companies has been causing the dairy industry some concern in recent years,” said the Minister of Agriculture (Mr E. B. Cullen) today. “Representations have been made to the Government on behalf of the industry by the National Dairy Federation and the New Zealand Dairy Board, and as a result, the Government has set up a committee to investigate and report upon these aspects. The committee will consist’ of Mr A. H. Foy, Director of the Dairy Division, representing the Department of Agriculture, as chairman, Mr C. H. Courtney, secretary of the New Zealand Dairy Board, Mr F. W. Grom, office solicitor to the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, representing the dairy industry, and Mr E. C. Adams, District Land Registrar, Wellington, representing the Registrar of Companies. The secretary of the committee is Mr J. E. Marshall, of- the Department of Agriculture. Matters which have been referred to the committee for investigation and report were: 1, the necessity for amendments to the existing legislation in relation to dry share-holding in dairy companies, and 2, the position with regard to articles of association, with a view to providing more adequately for the modern operation and administration of dairy companies, Mr Cullen said. The committee would in the first instance receive written submissions from dairy companies and any persons interested in the matters under review. “I can assure all companies and persons interested that any submissions. made will be treated in the strictest confidence by the committee,” Mr Cullen added. “The committee proposes to visit certain dairying centres later, to examine more closely any matters brought under its notice.” *
