Romantic And Chellow Dene At Westport

With an average of more than 12 horses carded for each race, the Westport Jockey Club will open its autumn programme at Westport tomorrow. The main event will be the Westport Hack Handicap, with Royal Robe, who won two races at Hokitika recently, heading the list. Further down, Romantic, a Coronach threeryear-old, appears to be well placed, and Te Wanaka would need only to repeat his best form to have more than an even chance. Romantic, Royal Robe, and Te Wanaka may be the final summing-up.

The main race will be the Colvin Handicap of seven furlongs, in which there is plenty of recent form as a guide to investors. The prospects of Chellow Dene, Here Hine and Deep Harmony make most appeal here. Both Chellow Dene and Here Hine raced successfully on the recent Grey-Hokitika circuit, and Deep Harmony has recently shown promise of a return to form. The track is likely to be somewhat yielding after the recent heavy rains. A special feature of the meeting will be the use for the first time on the West Coast, of starting stalls. These will be used for the start of the six-furlong races and in view, of the possible adoption of this device by other clubs on the West Coast at a comparatively early date there will be considerable interest in the experiment. The win-and-place system of betting will be used and the following horses should be well supported: Buller Stakes.—Elskar, Kinlass, Card master. Denniston Trot. —Loriot> Sandy Drive, Young Neen. Roche Handicap.—Glamis Pal, Royal Tor, High Order. Westport Hack.—Romantic, Royal Robe, Te Wanaka. Scanlon Hack.—Dress Rehearsal, Sitology, Post Graduate.
