Empire Golf Team

American golfers are urging that future Ryder Cup pro. internationals be the United States v the Empire, instead of versus Great Britain. On this basis, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and New Zealand could be called on for talent. Locke, von Nida, Pickworth, and Cremin would have strengthened the team that went down one to 11. A British side of a dozen, including six players annually: from the major Dominions, would | give a great fillip to the game. . Blomfield Fit

Probably the best news for New Zealand wrestling enthusiasts at this stage of the proceedings is that ai succesfully renovated and thoroughly trained Lofty Blomfield is. going to be ready for the American importations when they arrive early next month. Blomfield is confident that he has been freed from the varicose veins bugbear which has affected his wrestling for a number of seasons. There is scarcely a sign of the swollen veins which were once so prominent. Heartened by the extent of the improvement, Blomfield has trained with unusual thoroughness.

Attempt on World Record Following a suggestion that Frank Tredrea, the New Zealand 10-mile human paced track cycling recordholder, should be given the opportunity of attacking the British Empire record, comes word that the brilliant Aucklander intends to go one better. Arrangements have been completed for him to make an attempt on the world’s record at Western Springs Stadium on March 24. Tredrea will have selected pacers, fellows like Alan Stonex and Graham Hughes, who have the ability to draw, him out. Cycling officials in Wellington, when asked for the accepted world mark, said that there was some confusion between professional and amateur times for the event. One thing is certain. Tredrea will better his mark of 20min 17.4 sec set at the national championships at Auckland last March. On that occasion the pacers simply did not have the ability to step up the speed when he called for it.

Previous Royal Visits The coming tour of the Dominion by their Majesties the King and Queen recalls that five visits have already been paid to New Zealand by Royalty. The first was that of the Duke of Edinburgh, second son of

Queen Victoria, who came in 1869 as a representative of her Majesty and also as captain of H.M.S.S. Galatea. The second visit was that of King George V and Queen Mary, then the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York, who arrived in the Royal yacht Ophir in 1901. The Prince of Wales, now the Duke of Windsor, came to the Dominion in the Renown in 1920. This was followed by the Duke and Duchess of York’s 1927 tour and by that of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, in H.M.A.S. Australia’in 1934.

N.Z. Flax on St Helena New Zealand’s connections with the British island of St Helena, 1200 miles from the west coast of Africa, are recalled by the announcement that Mr E.,W. Sutton, stripping mill superintendent for New Zealand Woolpack and Textiles, Ltd., Foxton, has been invited by the Colonial Office to visit the island as adviser to the phormium tenax (New Zealand, flax) industry established there. He will sail by, the Arawa on Tuesday. . An area of 3347 acres carrying phbrmium tenax supplies nine stripping mills and produces approximately 100 tons of fibre for export.—(P.A.)
