Truman Seeks More Urgent Aid For Europe
(Rec. 11.25 a.m.) WASHINGTON, March 11.
President Truman today asked Congress for an additional 55,000,000 dollars to help to tide Western Europe over until the European recovery programme is enacted.
Congress voted 540,000,000 dollars temporary aid last autumn, including 18.000,000 dollars for China. It was evpected I hat this money would lasi until Ihe Marshall Plan was passed, but in a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Martin (Republican, Massachusetts) Mr Truman said today: “The events which have taken place in Europe in recent weeks do not permit us, with safety or prudence, to risk a break in the supply flow at this moment. I, therefore, hope Congress will find it possible to make available the needed funds before April 1.”
