GENERAL NEWS Need For Eradication Of Gorse

Support for the view of Wanganui farmers that the harm done by gorse far outweighed its usefulness was given by the West Coast Federated Farmers which met at Greymouth today, and it was recommended that all means of exterminating the plant, be explored. It was pointed out that the weevil at present being used to combat gorse growth in New Zealand prevented to a certain extent its spread only, and did nothing to eradicate the established plant itself.

Gorge Road Re-Opened The Buller . Gorge road, it is expected, will be open for traffic at intervals throughout the week-end, as the work of the graders clearing the slip at Windy Point permits. The Greymouth branch of the Automobile Association received advice today that the road had been re-opened under such conditions. It is stressed that motorists will be required to exercise care in negotiating the site of the slip and to make certain that no boulders have fallen, particularly at night.

Stolen Cycles ‘Some comment is necessary on. the easy manner in which stolen bicycles can be disposed of, in this country, especially to second-hand dealers, and we think that: it is a matter which warrants consideration by the authorities,” said Mr C. R. Thomas who with Mr G. Fowler, also a Justice of the Peace, dealt at Westport with charges against Neville John Davidson Millar, a seaman, of deserting an overseas ship and the theft of two bicycles. He added that while bicycles were easy to dispose of there was some encouragement for them to be stolen. Millar was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment on the theft charges, the two terms to be served concurrently. Thrift Penalised

“There is something radically wrong with legislation which tends to penalise thrift,” said Mr Arthur Craig (Greenfield), deputy chairman of the Farm Accounting Assoiation, at its annual meeting in Dunedin. “You are all aware of the length to which some elderly people have to go in order to dispose of assets which might stop them from receiving benefits from the State.” Mr Craig said that the legislation governing universal superannuation was anomalous in that it tended to discourage people from saving their earnings. He expressed the hope that when members of the association’s staff qualified for the recently inaugurated staff superannuation scheme they would also be entitled to obtain the Government benefits. In his opinion, everyone was entitled to them, regardless of any means test.
