Southern Opinion On Cup Issue: Unlikely Runners

[SPECIAL TO STAR] DUNEDIN, This Day. Although rain has fallen at Wingatui during the week it has not affected the track seriously for the opening of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Centennial meeting tomorrow. Red Pickle will not be a starter in the President’s Handicap and Sal’s Pal may also be missing from this field as present intentions are to start him in the Victory Handicap. Waiau King will start in the Haere Mai Handicap in preference to the Edinburgh Handicap and Loyal Lady in the Centennial Cup. The issue in the Centennial Cup is very open. The Invercargill trainer, T. E. Pankhurst holds a strong hand with Sir Garnish and Spare Part. Most support may come for Sir Garnish as the likelihood of an easing track will not suit Spare Part, who may be in need of a race to tune him up. Indian Dawn and Howe hold their places as two of the early favourites and they may prove the hardest to beat. Form horses include: — Hurdle Handicap.—Wee Mac, Percy-Gunther bracket, Robert. Haeremai Handicap.—Olio, Grania, Flibbertigibbet. John Wickliffe Handicap.—Sea Venture, Jan, Heroic Girl. President’s Handicap.—Excellency, Desert Girl, Bath Slipper.

J. Byrne: 11.30 a.m., 12-10 p.m., 12.50 p.m., 1.40 p.m., 2.25 p.m., 3.20 p.m.. 4.10 p.m., 5.0 p.m.

Related To Bruce Royal Lark, the winner of the first division of the Gordon Handicap at Gore last Saturday, is now ineligible to run in the Haere Mai Handicap at Wingatui on Thursday, but her connections took precautions against her winning, as she also accepted in the John Wickliffe Handicap. Billy Mae is also an acceptor in both races. Royal Lark is closely related to Bruce and Royal Tan, being by Royal Chief from Gay Lark, a half-sister by Panmure to Otetanui, the dam of Bruce and Royal Tan. Until recently Royal Lark had been trained by H. A. Anderton, at Wingatui, but she is now trained by her owner, Mr H. W. S. Faulks, of Wanaka.
