LABOURER CHARGED WITH BREAKING AND ENTERING HOTEL

(P.A.) GISBORNE, February 24. In the Supreme Court this afternoon, before Mr Justice Fair, Douglas Wright, aged 37, a labourer, of Auckland, stood trial on charges of breaking, entering, and the theft of a safe, £B3l 18s Id in money, and 12 packets of tobacco from the Royal Oak Hotel, Matawhero, on December 28, 1947. The hotel proprietor, Walter Wilson, described seeing from the veranda of the hotel a car driven from the premises at 4.30 a.m., and later identifying the car. He identified two torn bank notes, produced, which had been in the safe. John. M. Williams, a drover, said that three men, including accused, visited the hotel on the night of December 28 and were refused liquor. At 3.45 a.m. he went outside and saw accused looking at the upstairs.'Windows.

On the application of counsel for the defence, the hearing was adjourned to enable .the jury to inspect the hotel.
