PARTY SPLIT IN JAPAN MAY END COALITION
(Rec. 11.45 a.m.) TOKIO, Feb. 4. ■ The imminent collapse, of Japan’s Socialist Cabinet under the Prime Minister, Mr Tetsu Katayama, seemed certain late tonight following a split between the Right and Left wings of the key Social Democrat Party. .. At an. afternoon meeting 01. the party, which recently suffered a serious split after the expulsion and later the purging of the Agriculture Forestry Minister. Mr Rikizo Hirano, the Left wing decided to discontinue to support the party’s Coalition Government.
As the middle road Democratic Party, which is the second most powerful’in the Coalition, recently threatened to join forces with the Liberals (Consei vative), the resignation of the Cabinet is considered inevitable. Today the Supreme Court, acting on instructions from General MacArthur’s headquarters, upset the Tokio District Court’s decision that the purging of Mr Hirano was unjustified. The order from headquarters stated that no Japanese Court had the right to upset the decision of the purging committee, which was a Government body, responsible to the Prime Minister who in turn was answerable to General MacArthur.
