HEAT BRINGS “COATS OFF” INVITATION

“You may take your coats off, gentlemen.” With this unusual invitation, the annual conference of the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union opened at Greymouth yesterday morning. The chairman, Mr H. H. Fraser, of Timaru, set an example by presiding in his shirt-sleeves, and the majority of the delegates were also quick to shed their coats, while others sought the cooler corners of the room. The invitation to lighten clothing was not on account of the possibility of a heated discussion occurring but rather the result of the humid conditions, which introduced the visitors to weather considerably different from that usually attributed to the West Coast.

As the meeting in the morning opened, the temperature reached the peak for the .day, being 76.7 degrees, which is one of the highest this summer. The previous best recording was 77 degrees last month. Temperatures are again high today.
