Governor General Tells Story
One of the several Taranaki industries subsidiary to dairy-farming, the manufacture of casein, provided the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, with a good story which he. told against himself at a civic reception in his honour at Hawera. He said he had asked to see the large casein factory at Midhirst; just out of Stratford, during his visit to that town, and in due course inspected the laboratory. “A chemist there showed me some white casein in a test-tube,” related Sir Bernard. “Then he showed me some yellow casein with the command: ‘Here, taste this,’ which I did, and inquired the purpose for which it was used. ‘Oh,’ the chemist replied, ‘we use that to feed- the rats.’ ’ After the laughter had subsided, Sir Bernard rejoined: “Now I am wondering why he asked me to do that?”
