INQUIRY COMMITTEE FOR TAXI INDUSTRY
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 15. The Government has decided to appoint a committee of inquiry under the provisions of the transport legislation to report on the taxi industry. Announcing this today, the Minister of Transport (Mr Hackett) said that the inquiry was the result of representations to the Government. The committee would comprise three members, one from, the Transport Department, one from the New Zealand Federation of Labour, and one from the New Zealand Municipal Association, he said. Its order of reference would include the general economic conditions in the industry, the issue of taxicab licences and taxidrivers’ licences, alleged “trafficking” in licences, payments for goodwill, the internal organisation of the industry, and the standard of service to the public. The committee would start its work early next year, and would hold public sittings in the four main cities and the principal towns. The names of members will be announced, soon.
