SEAMEN DESERTERS IN DOMINIONS CAUSING CONCERN
fN.Z.P.A. SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT] LONDON, October 21.
The shipping correspondent, of the News Chronicle says: “British shipowners with vessels trading to Australia and South Africa are increasingly disturbed at the numbers of seamen 'who are deserting ships to settle in the Dominions. “The number of desertions among British seamen has now reached the highest total in the last 50 years. Many deserters are men who had left the sea but signed on again for the specific purpose of getting cheap passages to the Dominions. Many are married men who desert in the belief that once they are settled in the Dominions it will be possible to arrange passages for their wives and children.
“Desertions have been so serious in some small ships that the return voyages have been delayed. Shipowners and the Seamen’s Union are taking joint action to end the traffic.”
