‘CHAMBERLAIN RISKS’ WILL NOT BE TAKEN, SAYS BEVIN
(Rec. 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, October 22. “There must be no mistake —Britain will maintain an efficient Army, Navy and Air Force,” said the Foreign Minister (Mr Bevin), discussing the cuts in the services’ manpower in a speech in London. “It will not be a party to taking the chances which Mr Chamberlain took, which landed us in the 1939 mess,” he said. Referring to reform of the House of Lords, he said it was a great political risk that “backwoods men” might turn up at a critical time to defeat the Government. They might be incited by newspapers like the Daily Mail. He could not see any great constitutional crisis likely to arise from' the Government’s decision that the Lords’ veto must be limited to one year instead of two.
