OPERATIC SOCIETY DISCUSSES NEW PRODUCTION

The Greymouth Operatic Society will aim at shortening the time taken for the production of its next presentation. This was decided at the annual meeting last evening, when some members expressed the opinion that an abnormally long time had been taken over past productions. There was a good attendance at the meeting, Mr J. P. Gilbert presiding. No decision was reached as to the next musical comedy that, will be produced, the secretary having been, instructed to ascertain what musical scores and scripts will be available. In an effort to keep the members of the society together between productions, the social committee was asked ■to conduct monthly social evenings for members and friends. It was reported that a mixed choir of 40 voices has recently been formed from the society. It intended adopting a high-class repertoire, with a view to doing concert and radio work, and its weekly practices had already begun. Mr Gilbert thanked the outgoing committee and the members of the society for their loyal co-operation, in what had been a strenuous but most successful year. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow:—Patron, Mr J. W. Hannan; president, Mr J. P. Gilbert; vice-president, Mr A. Warnes; hon. solicitor, Mr J. -W. Hannan; hon. producer, Mr L. D. McGlashan; hon. musical director, Mr W. Ford; secretary-treasurer, Mr H. J. Wicks; hon. auditor, Mr J. A. McAlister (all re-elected); management committee: Mesdames V. G. Hutton, L. Wilkins, Misses I. Turner, M. Tennent, B. Stackhouse, Messrs L. C. Lindley, J. B. Bluett, J. Corbishley, M. Saunders, W. Wallwork; casting committee: the producer,, musical director, Miss A. Greaves, Messrs A. Warnes and L. C. Lindley.
