BUTCHERY FIRM FINED £35 FOR BREACHES OF RATIONING REGULATIONS
(P.A.) GISBORNE, This Day. Fines totalling £35 on seven charges of breaches of the Meat Rationing Regulations were imposed by the Magistrate, Mr E. L. Walton, on Russell Brothers, Ltd,., butchers. The charges dealt with the depositing or envelopes containing meat coupons in the Bank of New Zealand. Certificates were supplied that each of the seven envelopes contained 1800 coupons valued at £22 10s, whereas a check showed they contained between 1189 and 1911 coupons each.
The police prosecutor said the company benefited by the discrepancy by being allowed meat for the next period on the number of coupons shown on the envelopes. There was also a cash subsidy of 3s 7d by the Government on each £1 worth of coupons surrendered. Defence counsel said the coupons had been weighed in the envelopes instead of counted. There was no intention to defraud and the subsidy had been refunded.
