SPANISH PROTEST TO BRITAIN
IN.Z.P.A. SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT] LONDON, Oct. 9
The News Chronicle says that the Foreign Secretary (Mr Bevin) sent the Spanish Charge d’Affaires away from the Foreign Office “with a diplomatic flea in his ear” when he protested against Mr BeVin’s reception of the Spanish Socialist leader (Mr Prieto).
“The Spanish remonstrance suggests that General Franco mistakenly believes that the British and American differences with Russia have softened the acute disfavour with which the British Government and people read of the continued acts of violent oppression in Spain,” says the News Chronicle. “It is only fear of causing another civil wiir which prevents the British Government from giving more active support to the Spanish exiles. “The painful impression made on General Franco by Mr Bevin’s reception of Mr Prieto is unlikely to stop the British Government from recognising an interim Spanish Administration on the basis of the British, American, and French declaration of March 4, 1946, if such an administration can be formed on a sufficiently broad basis.” ’
