Action Urged In N.Z. To Meet Crisis
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, This Day. . A representative deputation of 80 Dunedin citizens who waited on the Mayor, Mr. D. C. Cameron, this morning urged that the general public was not yet fully informed pn the urgency of the British economic crisis and of the part New Zealand could play in alleviating the difficulties. The gathering submitted a resolution stating that the quickest means of galvanising the country into action and dispelling apathy, distrust and ignorance, was for the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland, to visit the chief centres and speak from a common platform.
The deputation requested the Mayor to invite Mr Fraser and Mr Holland to visit Dunedin and other centres as soon as possible to address meetings jointly. Speakers described as inadequate the effort so far proposed in saving infinitesimal quantities of cigarettes and petrol, and urged that the public be told promptly in terms that could be generally understood how serious and urgent was the need for action. “It appalls to think that we, a British people, should descend to such low levels as a ‘Miss New Zealand’ contest to find money for food parcels,” said Mr R. C. Burgess, a public accountant. He considered the scheme was only playing with the problem. Dean A. C. 11. Button said that the day of prayer next Sunday would have no value unless the prayers were translated into work.
