Beer Price Raised To 7d A Glass
After the end of this month, a glass of beer wil| cost sevenpence in Greymouth hotels and 10d will be charged for spirits. An undertaking to this effect, signed by the 22 hotelkeepers'in
the town, was shewn to an Evening Star reporter today by ' the president of the Greymouth
Licensed Victuallers’ Association, Mr A. Beban.
This decision means that Greymouth—and probably the West Coast —has followed the example set about six years ago by publicans in all parts of the Dominion with the exception of the West Coast and Lyttelton. At the present time beer in Greymouth costs 6d a glass and Is is paid for spirits. Whether this alteration in beer charges will mean that West Coast hotelkeepers will serve the 12oz glasses provided in other centres where the extra penny has been charged, or continue to use ifioz glasses has not been announced, and Mr Beban this morning declined to comment on this aspect. The serving 0f.120z glasses is covered by regulations in the centres which previously adopted the seven-penny charge. The prospect of other West Coast centres following the decision of Greymouth publicans, whose unanimity on the measure was emphasised. was mentioned by Mr Beban. He stated that the additional penny would also be charged for beer sold in Hokitika on and after Wednesday. October 1, and in Reefton and intervening townships. The position, he added, was less definite at Westport, but there was a possibility of a similar move being supported there.
