NO PERMIT TO ENTER: OVERSEAS SEAMEN FACE CHARGES

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Five seamen from the Swedish tanker Avanti, two being Finns, two Swedes, and one Norwegian, were charged before the Magistrate (Mr Stout) with having entered the country without a permit. There was some difficulty in making them understand the court proceeding until the services of Mr Kleen (consul for Sweden) were obtained. One man asked if it would be possible for him to remain in the country after a period of detention, but Mr Stout said this was beyond the power of the court. The defendants were ordered to be kept in custody for six months, or until a ship on which they could be deported earlier, arrived.
