CONTRACTS LET FOR WORK ON RADIO STATIONS
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. A contract has been let by the New Zealand Broadcasting Service for a new local station at Timaru. The station will have a power of two kilowatts. A contract has been let for the replacement of the present equipment of the four YA and the four ZB stations and the Palmerston North, Greymouth, and Nelson stations. The present transmitters will be overhauled and will later take over the programmes of the auxiliary stations. Both the district station and the auxiliary station will operate at 10 kilowatts, except 2YC, which will be of 60 kilowatts. Transmitter buildings will be provided at Kumara for the West Coast station, which will have an output of 10 kilowatts. The building programme ot the Broadcasting Service includes the erection of studios planned acoustically for broadcasting and of office accommodation in all towns where stations will operate. Negotiations have been started for the purchase of studio sites at various centres.
